Psalms 78:37

“Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils.] Who have their name here given them from a word that signifies to waste and destroy, they being the destroyers of mankind. So the Targum renders it by ayqyzm, which signifies spirits noxious and hurtful; but R. Elias Levita, in his Tishbi, p. 233, says it is a mistake to derive it from the root which signifies to waste and destroy; for then he says the “daleth” should have a “dagesh”; but does not tell us from whence it is derived. Deuteronomy Dieu, on (<400932>Matthew 9:32), derives it from the Arabic word daç, “to rule”, for these demons were heroes, princes who ruled over others, and so were reckoned among the gods. As…”

“For their heart was not right with him - Luther renders this, “Not fast with him.” The Hebrew word means “to fit, to prepare;” and the idea is, that the heart was not “adjusted” to such a profession, or did not “accord” with such a promise or pledge. It was a mere profession made by the lips, while the heart remained unaffected. See the notes at Psalms 78:8.
