41who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him; and many other women that came up with him unto Jerusalem.
42And when even was now come, because it was the Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,
43there came Joseph of Arimathaea, a councillor of honorable estate, who also himself was looking for the kingdom of God; and he boldly went in unto Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.
44And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.
45And when he learned it of the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph.

“And now when the even was come, etc..] “Of the preparation”, as the Syriac version reads; or “the night of the sixth day”:, as the Persic version renders it, “Friday” night: because it was the preparation; of the passover, and of the sabbath, when they prepared their food, and got it ready for the ensuing sabbath, on which it was not lawful to dress any; that is, the day before the sabbath; that is, Friday; on which day, it is clear, Christ suffered, died, and was buried.”

“The even - The time after three o’clock in the afternoon. The Preparation ... - The following day was to be a day of special solemnity, called the “great day” of the feast. More than ordinary preparation was therefore made for “that” Sabbath on the day before. Hence, the day was known as a day of preparation.
