Barnes' Notes
Albert Barnes (1798–1870) · Notes on the Whole Bible · 19th-century historical commentary
“But walked therein - Rather, “he walked therein,” meaning Joash, the “saviour” of the preceding verse. There remained the grove also in Samaria - It seems strange that Jehu had not destroyed this when he put down the worship of Baal 2 Kings 10:26-28. Perhaps the “grove” or “Asherah” worship was too closely connected with the old worship in high places to be set aside with the same ease as the rites newly introduced from Phoenicia. return to 'Top of Page'”

“13:6 Despite God’s rescue, Israel continued to sin, eventually resulting in the fall of the northern kingdom (17:21-23; 1 Kgs 14:15-16). • This Asherah pole (a Canaanite fertility symbol erected by Ahab, 1 Kgs 16:33) had apparently been spared in Jehu’s purge of Baal worship (2 Kgs 10:26-29).”
