And those that encamp by him [shall be] the tribe of Asher, etc.] Dan had a standard given him, though the son of an handmaid, being the firstborn of the sons of the handmaids, and his tribe being a warlike tribe, and very numerous; and Asher and Naphtali are placed by him, being the sons of handmaids also, and could not but contentedly pitch by him, who was the eldest of the sons of the handmaids Naphtali being his younger brother by mother’s as well as father’s side, and Asher the second son of Zilpah, Leah’s maid: and the captain of the children of Asher [shall be] Pagiel the son of Ocran; the same as in (<040113>Numbers 1:13 7:72).
